Starting small

Overwhelmed by a long to-do list? Start with one

When a list gets long, the problem is rarely the tasks. It is that you are looking at all of them at once. You do not have to see all 40.

A short way through

  1. Get it out of your head. Write everything down in one messy go. Do not sort yet.
  2. Pick one. Not the most important, just the one that feels slightly lighter, or the one that is closest to done.
  3. Make it small. What is the first two-minute step?
  4. Do it, then decide. Stop or keep going.
  5. Leave the rest alone for now. They will still be there. Looking at them does not help.

If your energy is low

Choose something small and physical (put one thing back) or very short. Save the heavy thing for when you have more energy. There is no prize for forcing the hardest task on a bad day.
